Buz Aldrin (Pickwick's Contact Light) - “Contact light" where the actual first words spoken from the surface of the Moon, by Buzz Aldrin on 20 July 1969 when Apollo 11 landed. Over six hours later, Neil Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface and uttered the immortal line “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”.
Alan Shepard (Pickwick's Light this Candle") - After several delays and sitting in the Freedom 7 Mercury capsule for four hours, astronaut Alan Shepard was ready to launch and stated "Fix your little problem and light this candle". On May 5th, 1961, he launched aboard the Mercury-Redstone 3, becoming the first American to fly into space. Project Mercury led to many breakthroughs in NASA’s understanding of spaceflight. NASA learned how to put people in orbit, how to fly a spacecraft and that people could live and work in space. Project Mercury paved the way for launching more humans into space in the Apollo, Space Shuttle and Commercial Crew Programs. Amy's father, John Osborne Aberg, one of the early engineers at NASA (even prior to the formation of NASA) worked on Mercury, Saturn V, Apollo (helping to design the tip), and many other projects. Originally from Sweden before moving to America, alas one of Mr Aberg's passions and side-projects, that of metrication, was not quite as successful. (In fact, he couldn't even get his 3 daughters, Amy, Missy, and Dawn, to master metrics lol). However, he did get so far as to have several speed signs which featured both MPH and KM. Checkout the Display in the Rocket Garden to see the results of the efforts of Amy's dad and many other brilliant scientists and engineers.
